External Illumination Units for Stereo Microscopes

External illumination units expand your stereo microscope with precise and reproducible lighting control – from uniform all-around lighting to focused spot illumination. Professional lighting systems ensure high light quality with consistent intensity directly on the specimen.

Types of Illumination

  • Ring lights (Series OZB-IR): space-saving mounting on the objective, ideal for even, shadow-free illumination around the sample.
  • Cold light sources with (dual) gooseneck (Series OZB-IF): flexible positioning; adjustable light cone enables focused or diffuse illumination – ideal for various surfaces and component geometries.
  • Polarizing ring light OZB-A7101: specifically designed for shiny or reflective surfaces.

Key Benefits

  • Maximum flexibility and ease of use in stereo microscopy – choose the right lighting for your sample and application.
  • Outstanding, uniform and powerful illumination for reliable analysis and documentation.
  • Compatible with standard stereo microscopes; note exceptions for certain ring lights (OSE-1, OSF-4G, OZL-45R, OZC-5, OZG-4).
  • Optional UK power plug available (model-dependent).

Application Tips

  • Need shadow-free lighting? Use a ring light.
  • Want to highlight surface structures? Adjust the gooseneck for angled light incidence – from focused to diffused.
  • Inspecting glossy parts? Use the polarizing ring light OZB-A7101.

FAQ – External Illumination for Stereo Microscopes

  1. What types of external illumination are available and what are they used for?

For stereo microscopes, two main types are common: ring lights (even, shadow-free top illumination) and cold light goosenecks or light guides (directed light, flexible positioning). Ring lights are ideal for homogeneous inspection; goosenecks highlight edges and textures through targeted lighting.
  2. Is the lighting compatible with my KERN stereo microscope?

In general, yes – KERN ring lights are compatible with all stereo microscope series including OSE, OSE-1, OSF, OZL, OZM, OZP, and OZS. Exceptions include OZL 465, OZL 466 and OZL 456. Please check the ring light’s inner diameter and the microscope’s objective diameter.
  3. When is a polarizing ring light useful?

For highly reflective or glossy surfaces. The polarizing ring light minimizes glare and reveals finer structural details.
  4. Which selection criteria are important (inner diameter, segmentation, color temperature)?

Depending on the model, you can select inner diameter, color temperature, dimming capability and segmentation (e.g. individually switchable ring segments) – all critical for spatial conditions and contrast control.
  5. Can brightness be adjusted – and is a focused light beam possible?

Many ring lights are dimmable (depending on model). Cold light goosenecks additionally offer adjustable light intensity and a focused light cone – from spotlight to diffuse illumination.
  6. Are international variants available (e.g. UK plug)?

Yes, UK plug variants are available. Please check the corresponding order number or variant.
  7. Are the lighting systems part of KERN’s modular system?

Yes. External lighting units are designed as accessories for the stereo series and are part of the modular accessory system (see accessory listings in stereo chapters and the accessory index).
